If you’re staying at The Vale, Cornwall, this winter or thinking of booking, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy everything the area has to offer. Crisp sea air, peaceful paths, cosy villages… it’s the season that invites you to slow down, wrap up warm, and head out exploring with your favourite people.
And because we’re all about connection, adventure and nature, we’ve put together our Ohana-approved guide to winter walking, rambling, hiking and family-friendly adventures around Looe, Polperro and Fowey.
Let’s get wandering.
Winter walks near The Vale in Looe
One of our favourite things about our location is how close you are to Looe’s most beautiful winter walk spots. The town feels peaceful and glittery this time of year, perfect for gentle strolls that suit all energy levels.
- Hannafore coast walk
- If you want a walk that delivers maximum views with minimum effort, this is the one. Think sweeping sea vistas, salty breezes, and Looe Island looking extra mystical in the winter light. Bring snacks. Non-negotiable.
- Looe riverside walk
- A calm, pretty meander along the river, ideal for families, slow walkers, or anyone who prefers “gentle wander” vibes over “full expedition.” Expect herons, egrets and a peaceful waterside atmosphere.
- These walks are perfect for warming up, unwinding, and easing into holiday mode at The Vale.
Winter rambles in Polperro
Just a short hop from The Vale, Polperro is a winter dream. Quiet, charming and wonderfully atmospheric, it’s the perfect place to potter, ramble and soak up your spectacular surroundings.
Polperro to Talland Bay
Before you hit the coastal path, take a slow wander through Polperro’s village lanes, colourful cottages, harbourside views and little shops that make you want to explore every corner.
Then head out on the Polperro to Talland Bay ramble: steady climbs, beautiful sea views, and plenty of photo-worthy spots. It’s scenic without being too demanding, perfect for all ages and first-time winter walkers.
If Cornwall gave out awards for “most charming winter walk,” this route would definitely be in the running.
Winter hiking near Fowey
If your party includes a few adventurers who refuse to “hibernate”, then Fowey is the place to stretch your legs. The coast paths around here feel wild and exhilarating in the best possible way.
Fowey to Readymoney Cove & St Catherine’s Castle
Short, scenic and seriously satisfying. The castle ruins add drama, the cove is gorgeous in any weather, and the views will fill your camera roll instantly.
The Hall Walk
A classic Cornish circular route linking Fowey and Polruan. Winter opens up views usually hidden by summer foliage: woodland paths, estuary scenery, and cute ferries included.
Gribbin Head & The Daymark
For those who like a proper hike. Think fresh breezes, big horizons, huge skies and that invigorating “we earned our hot chocolate” feeling.
Outdoor winter activities near The Vale
Because winter fun isn’t just about walking, Cornwall still has plenty to offer during the colder months.
Rockpooling at Talland Bay
Clear winter pools and plenty of tiny sea creatures to spot. Bring gloves, curiosity, and maybe a magnifying glass if you’re feeling extra adventurous.
Birdwatching along the Looe River
Even if you’re not usually into birds, winter in Looe might convert you. Herons, curlews, oystercatchers, egrets, it’s basically a feathery fashion show.
Storm watching (safely!)
Cornish waves really show off in winter. Find a safe viewpoint in Looe or Polperro and enjoy nature’s dramatic side.
